Ideal Candidate
Tummy tuck surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.A tummy tuck is a good option for you if:
- You do not smoke
- You have realistic expectations
- You are not overweight (i.e. your BMI is <30)
- You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
- You are concerned by the feeling that your abdomen has a bad shape
Tummy Tuck Incision
A full tummy tuck requires an incision from hipbone to hipbone in the shape of a smile. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary. The incision could be as little as 5 inches (mini tummy tuck) to all the way around (circumferential tummy tuck also known as 360).Surgery and Anesthesia
Through the incision, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and sutured together and excess fat, tissue and skin are removed through liposuction. A second incision around the navel may be necessary to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen.
Repair of Abdominal Muscles
In some individuals especially those post pregnancies, the rectus abdominus muscle may sit far apart (diastasis or divarication of rectus). This is brought together with permanent sutures during a Tummy tuck. Sometimes, laxity of the lateral abdominal muscles is also present, which can be tightened using permanent sutures for muscle plication. Rarely there is a horizontal excess that contributes to a bulge, this also is strengthened and repaired.Postoperative Recovery
Following your surgery, dressings are applied to your incisions, and a garment is placed to minimize swelling and to support your abdomen as it heals. Two draining tubes will be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.
You will be put placed in a bent position with pillows under your legs to prevent excessive stretching force on your wound. In your accommodation your post care assistant will also teach you how to get out the bed to minimize straining of the abdominal muscles and skin. Your posture will often be hunched over for at least a week, once drainage has stopped (usually 3-5 days), the tubes will be removed.
You may be discharged on the same day or next day, depending on the number and extensiveness of treatment areas. . Adequate postoperative rest to allow healing and minimize complications is essential for the first 5-7 days. It is recommended that you exercise caution with lifting and heavy activities for the first 20 days.
Your first postoperative appointment is usually around 3-5 days.

The degree of surgical success can be altered by how each individual's body responds to surgery and healing. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure; revision surgery may be required.Be sure to ask questions:It's very important to ask questions about your procedure. It's natural to feel some anxiety, whether it's excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don't be shy about discussing these feelings and any specific concerns with your doctor or any of our staff members.
