Ideal Candidate
Nose surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.Nose surgery is a good option for you if:
- You do not smoke
- You have realistic expectations
- You want to narrow the nostrils, even-out a bump on the bridge or tip of the nose, or make the nose appear smaller.
- You want to improve breathing and boost self confidence and self esteem.
Recovery
After the nose surgery is completed, a splint, internal tubes or packing will likely be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing for approximately 7 days. Splints and sutures will be removed after a week at your first postoperative appointment. Avoid blowing your nose or participate in contact sport for the first two months. You may experience occasional nose bleed or ‘stuffiness' in the early postoperative period as swelling and nasal discharge diminish. While initial swelling will diminish within the first 20 days, it may take up to a year for your final nasal contour to be realized. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome. Swelling may come and go and worsen in the morning during the first year following your nose surgery. For more information on postoperative instructions, click here
Risks
The decision to have nose surgery is extremely personal and you'll have to decide if the benefits will fulfill your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. Your doctor will explain in detail the risks associated with surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks or potential complications.Nose surgery risks include:
- Infection
- Anesthesia risks
- Nose asymmetry
- Poor wound healing
- Unfavorable scarring
- Pain, which may persist
- Skin contour irregularities
- Possibility of revision surgery
- Skin discoloration and swelling
- Bleeding (hematoma) in the septum
- Change in skin sensation (numbness) of the nose
- Nasal airway alterations may occur after a rhinoplasty or septoplasty that may interfere with normal passage of air through the nose
- Rupture of small surface vessels of the nose leading to a nose bleed
- Sutures may spontaneously surface through the skin, become visible or produce irritation that require removal
- Cardiac and pulmonary complications can occur in longer surgical procedures and may be associated with the formation of, or increase in, blood clots in the venous system
- Nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal septum) may develop but is rare; additional surgical procedures may be required to repair the nasal septum but in some cases, it may be impossible to correct this complication
"Most of the risks are very uncommon; some people may be at higher risk than others. Your doctor will discuss this with you during your consultation if any of these risks are specifically pertinent to you."
Although nose surgery is an effective procedure where the benefits significantly outweigh the risks, the degree of surgical success can be altered by how each individual's body responds to surgery and healing. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure; revision surgery may be necessary.Don't hesitate to ask questions: It's very important to ask questions about your nose surgery procedure. It's natural to feel some anxiety, whether it's excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don't be shy about discussing these feelings and any specific concerns with your doctor or any of our staff members.
