Liposuction in Colombia - Your New Look

"Most patients who undergo liposuction procedure are ecstatic with the results; many enjoy a new sense of self-confidence, as well as a wider selection of wardrobe options and activities; however, it may take up to several months for your swelling to completely disappear and for your new figure to be revealed. Ideal Candidate

Liposuction is an option for those who are unhappy with excess fat deposits unresponsive to diet and exercise. Localized fat deposits may be due to over eating, inherited family traits, or lack of physical activities. Ideal liposuction patients are healthy, non-smoking adults within 30% of their ideal weight. These ideal individuals should also possess positive outlooks, realistic expectations, and clear goals for body contouring.

Liposuction is a good option for you if:

  • Have clear goals
  • Have a positive outlook of yourself
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are not overweight (i.e. your BMI is <30)
  • You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight

Types of Liposuction available in the market

The most common are: Standard, Power-assisted, Ultrasound-assisted, and Laser-assisted; however, there is many more options available:
  • Standard liposuction A.K.A Traditional or tumescent liposuction involves placing fluid into the fat cell layer. This fluid contains a local anesthetic as well as agents to shrink blood vessels. The fluid is put in is then removed together with fat using hollow cannulas.
  • Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) devices have recently become available. PAL devices use power supplied by an electric motor or compressed air to produce either a rapid in-and-out movement or a spinning rotation of an attached liposuction cannula. Advocates of PAL assert that it makes liposuction easier for the surgeon.
  • Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) requires the use of a large volume of tumescent fluid and uses either a metal probe or metal paddle to deliver ultrasonic energy and heat into subcutaneous fat. Internal UAL is the term used to describe the technique where a long metal probe, which may be solid or hollow, is inserted into fat through a large incision.

Vaser Liposuction (also called Liposelection by Vaser) is a form of UAL that wields advanced technology to avoid many of the complications inherent in traditional UAL. With the Vaser device, patients enjoy a much faster recovery, less bruising and swelling and a better end result.

  • Laser-assisted liposuction uses a cool or cold laser beam to emulsify the fat, which is not removed by suction. Because this approached is performed on smaller areas of fat, the emulsified fat is left in place for natural absorption by the body. Small incisions are placed to drain any excess fluids or fat.

Postoperative Recovery

Once your procedure is completed, your garment or tapes will cover treatment areas. These help to control swelling and compress the skin to your new body contours. Mobilization is encouraged as soon as you have recovered from your general anesthetics.

You may be discharged on the same day or next day, depending on the number and extensiveness of treatment areas. . Adequate postoperative rest to allow healing and minimize complications is essential for the first 5-7 days. It is recommended that you exercise caution with lifting and heavy activities for the first 20 days. Your first postoperative appointment is usually around 3-5 days.

Specific Risks of Liposuction

The decision to have liposuction is extremely personal and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. The doctor and the anesthesiologist will explain in detail the risks associated with liposuction surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks or potential complications.

Possible risks of liposuction include:

  • Uneven contours
  • Rippling or loose skin
  • Skin or nerve damage
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Infection
  • Fat clots
  • Blood clots
  • Excessive fluid loss or fluid accumulation
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Thermal burn or heat injury from ultrasound with the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty technique
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Change in skin sensation
  • Skin discoloration or swelling
  • Asymmetry
  • Pain, which may persist
  • Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs
  • Poor wound healing
  • Persistent swelling in the legs
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Possibility of revision surgery

"Most of the risks are very uncommon; some people may be at higher risk than others. Your doctor will discuss this with you during your consultation if any of these risks are specifically pertinent to you."

Although liposuction surgery can be an effective procedure where the benefits significantly outweigh the risks, like everything in the practice of medicine and surgery, it is not an exact science. The degree of surgical success can be altered by how each individual's body responds to surgery and healing. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure; revision surgery may be required.

Be sure to ask questions: It's very important to ask questions about your procedure. It's natural to feel some anxiety, whether it's excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don't be shy about discussing these feelings and any specific concerns with your doctor or any of our staff members.
